I beleive asking for an open relationship is an impolite direct way of asking for no relationship!!

Coz a relationship is never meant to be open or closed. It is the highest level of sharing and caring for one person and no doubts it has it's own demands. It's a total win win situation if you are with someone who is right for you, else, you will feel fucked, physically and mentally!
